The 1968 League Cup

As was usual, the first trophy in English football to be settled each season was the Football League Cup, and the 1967/68 final took place on 2 March 1968 at Wembley. There were two doubts for the Leeds team, John Giles and Jimmy Greenhoff. With Les, both flew down to Weybridge where United’s hotel base for the final was, on the Friday night, and would each have a fitness test on the morning of the match. Giles had had flu and Greenhoff had been toiling with a swollen knee; both were passed fit.

Leeds had quite comfortably eased their way to the final, beating Luton Town, Bury, Sunderland, Stoke City and, over two legs in the semi-final, Derby County. They would meet Arsenal at Wembley. It was a tense and tough affair, and would be regarded as one of the most notorious finals played in English football. Having said that, the one goal scored was something of a screamer. It had come in the 18th minute when Eddie Gray aimed a customary corner kick at Jack Charlton standing close to the goal line in between the goalposts, but the ball marginally eluded Charlton and was headed clear to Terry Cooper who instantly whacked a fabulous volley high in to the net from the edge of the box. Having opened that precious advantage, Leeds were not going to let it slip, concentrating on defence for the duration. At the final whistle their players could hardly contain their delight; they had won the first major trophy in the club’s history. And they hadn’t finished just yet.
