Chapter 23
When we got to MaMaâs apartment Jerome knocked on the door. It was answered by a short, light-skinned woman with gray hair, a grandmotherly demeanor, and a green and white checkered cotton housedress.
âWhy look at you,â she said to Jerome. âYou are all grown up. Please, my friends, come on in.â She spoke with a slight Southern accent. The walls of her living roomâin sharp contrast to the bland gray hallwayâwere bright green. The windows all had white and green gingham drapes. Her short white Berber carpet was spotless. Her kitchen, dining and living areas all formed one room, although each space was separated by partial walls. The partial wall between the kitchen and dining room formed a bar. On the bar was a large tin container filled with living herbs. The kitchen and the living room had a wide entrance twice the size of a doorway. The whole apartment was bright, clean and inviting.
I had expected to see masks or African art objects, but the only decorations on the walls were what appeared to be family photographs, a water color painting of purple irises in a gesso frame, and an oil painting of trees along a river. A large cut-glass vase filled with daffodils and daisies sat on the kitchen table.
MaMa led us into the living room. Jerome sat in a solid-green oversized stuffed chair. Fred and I sat on a white sofa with thick down pillows. The room smelled of chocolate chip cookies.
âCan I get you boys something to eat or drink?â she asked. We all shook our heads. MaMa sat in an antique hand-carved ebony rocker. I noticed she had a television, but it was in the dining room not the living room as in most houses. This was a room for conversations, not for entertainment.
She stared at me for a long time before she spoke. Then she turned to Jerome, âHave you now learned, âMganga,â that matters of good and evil are real? You have crossed a line and traveled to a place of great darkness. I pray you may someday return from your journey.â
Once I would have laughed at such talk, but this was not a bad episode of Kung Fu; this was real.
She turned to me. âThomas is trying to help you. He does not like you, but he blames himself for getting you involved. He also wants you to know he is fine and does not need what you have taken. You will require an allegiance among the dead. He will help you.â
âI donât understand what is happening to me.â
âI canât help you, not yet. Everything Chloe has told you is either a lie or a truth intended to deceive. Legba is the most powerful Loa. He is the guardian of the sun and the gate between our material world and the world of the spirit. If you are to live, it is through him. He has knowledge of the past and present in his world and ours. We need him to take us to the crossroads.
