ROBBIE

“What is happening?!” the receptionist screamed, her hands trembling as she peered into the operating room that Marston had just rushed into.

Robbie followed slowly after him, wary of coming inside again after what Anchali had said about the sterile field. Had he even bothered closing her up before making a run for it? A quick glance toward the operating table seemed to indicate that, no, he had not. Robbie wasn’t really sure what he was looking at, but he could definitely see a lot of red in what was visible of the woman’s torso.

“Crap, crap, crap,” he muttered, unsure what to do. Should they call another doctor? They had to. They couldn’t just leave her like this.

“He’s running!” Marston suddenly shouted, and then Robbie heard the sound of a door being flung open, followed by heavy, rapid footfalls. He rushed toward the sound, alarmed to see Marston rushing off into the rear parking lot.

“I’ll go out the front!” Bhongam declared before turning on his heel and rushing away, leaving Robbie alone with the unconscious woman and a hysterical receptionist.

Great, now he definitely couldn’t leave the woman alone.

“Let’s close this first,” Robbie muttered as he pulled the emergency exit shut.

A part of him wondered what might happen if Marston happened to come back this way with Anchali, but he couldn’t just leave it open with the woman still lying on the table, right? He had to try to conserve what little was left of the sterile field until a doctor could get here to fix this.

“Hey!” Robbie called out as the receptionist continued to babble. “Hey! We need help! Call for another doctor, a surgeon who can close her up properly!”

The receptionist finally stopped squawking for long enough to look at Robbie. Her gaze was vacant, her mouth hanging open slightly as her eyes drifted from Robbie to the woman on the table.

“Do you know what we should do?” Robbie asked her. He knew she was a receptionist, but she worked at a medical clinic, so he figured maybe she knew a little more about what the protocol in this situation should be. “Should we cover her or something?”

“Lehk thi…” she murmured, shaking her head and backing slowly away from the room. “Lehk thi. Chan tha mi di!” Then she turned around and fled, leaving Robbie alone with the woman.

“Hey!” Robbie called out, his voice cracking in his panic. “Hey! Wait! At least call for help!”

He let out a groan of frustration as he looked down at the woman. Robotically, he reached for his phone. If the receptionist was having a nervous breakdown, he couldn’t count on her to call for help. His hands shook as he went to dial, trying to recall the number for emergencies here. Was it 911? No, there was a special one for medical emergencies. Robbie remembered reading about that on the flight, and this definitely counted as a medical emergency.

“1646!” Robbie exclaimed triumphantly as he rushed to dial. He waited with bated breath as the phone rang, keeping one eye on the woman the entire time.
