New Beginings

Within an hour the boathouse area was crawling with FBI evidence specialists, divers, and supervisors. Sal’s car was towed from the marina parking lot, and I was now back aboard Lady Dawn with Dawn. Word had spread fast around the marina about all the cars with government license plates that had been rolling in. Murph, Linds, Marlin, and Kari all stopped by the boat for a few minutes, wanting to know what happened and find out if I was okay. I had stopped shaking by the time they all left. Well, almost.

Rikki called, already having all the details and adding a few of her own. Joey Newell had been hauled out of Bayside in handcuffs and was being charged with numerous crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder. My murder. That just sounds creepy saying it, especially since it came so close to happening.

Rik also told me that jerk Lonnano had been hiding the fact that he had the security video recorder from the Shack. The crime lab had able to recover most of the stored video, including the part about me being dragged to the car. It also clearly showed me being driven away and back again by that couple who murdered Shalloway and then met by Sal Ricci and another woman.

I was now officially cleared of any charges, and Martino and Lonnano’s crazy theory was dead. But I was still pissed. They had known I was innocent, and this charade had been all about politics; they weren’t going to release this “new” information until after the election. Now I planned on making a big campaign donation to Martino’s opponent, whoever he or she might be.

“Jeeze, I just heard about alla this on the VHF, Case. You okay?” A clearly shaken Baloney had barged in through the dockside door without knocking.

“I’m good, Baloney. Looks like this thing is almost over. I just have to get this damn anklet off and I’ll be happy.”

“Oh, that’s good, I was worried. Hey, can I grab a…”

I couldn’t help but smile. “Help yourself to a beer, Bill.” Baloney does have his priorities in order.

There was a knock at the same dockside salon door, and Dawn answered it. It came from one of the last people I expected to see at Mallard Cove. “I hear there was all kinds of crazy happenings around here today. Hey, do you have a beer, Casey? I’m fresh out.”

“Help yourself, Sandy, you know where they live. What the hell are you doing here, by the way?” Baloney gave Sandy Morgan a concerned glare as he grabbed a cold Red Stripe from the bar refrigerator.

“You left, and suddenly it got real boring around Bayside. Plus, with Jeff bringing Predator down here, Micah was going to be driving back and forth to see him anyway, so I decided to come see what all the fuss was about this place. I like it, so you can consider me as being moved down here as well. I was starting to run out of decent characters and plots up at Bayside anyway.
