We won. Thank God. When Coach Wright had spoken to me before the game, laying on all the pressure, I felt like we had to win. I wanted to make sure that I, as the captain, have what it takes to lead this team to victory. A lot is riding on my shoulders this year, and sometimes I question whether this is really what I want from my life.

For so long, I’ve dreamed about making it into the NFL and becoming a pro, but right now, with all the pressure, I feel like maybe there’s a different dream out there for me to pursue.

After I’ve showered and talked to the coach, I head off to the cafe where I know Serena is waiting for me. I’m excited to see her and I can’t wait to let off a little steam. The pressure is building and, honestly, I feel like having a little fun tonight, and doing something a little crazy, maybe.

I walk into the cafe, immediately spotting Serena sitting in the booth with Martin. My blood begins to boil over. I am almost of a mind to rush over there and punch his lights out. I did tell him to stay away from her or face the consequences. Nobody drags my reputation through the dirt, and especially not to the woman I care about the most.

However, this time I control my anger when I see her get up and walk away from him. Martin’s eyes meet mine from across the cafe and I smirk back at him, knowing full well that Serena most likely told him off for lying to her about me.

It is then that Serena spots me. As if on cue, a huge smile populates her face. It almost melts my heart to see such genuine happiness when she sees me. She rushes over, almost gliding across the floor separating us, and flings her arms around my neck.

“Congratulations,” she says, her smile getting wider and more infectious by the second.

“Hey, you.”

I know we’re only hanging out as friends, so I don’t kiss her, even though I want to, more than anything.

Serena continues flashing those pearly whites at me, making me want to kiss her even more.

I lean in close to her ear. “Want to get out of here?”

She nods. “Absolutely.”

I take her hand and together we leave the cafe, leaving behind all the drama and, most importantly, Martin, who I can only imagine has his head exploding after he sees me leaving with Serena. Gianna is also there, and I’m sure she’s upset I’ve left so soon and with another woman.

I hold Serena’s hand tightly, knowing there’s only one place I want to take her right now. And it’s the very place I had just left.

“I want to show you something.”

“Okay.”

We head back to the sports center, which is right in front of the stadium. “Hey Jerry,” I say to the security guard.

“Hey Darren, what are you doing here?”

“I just wanted to show my girl the field.”

“Sure thing.”

Jerry lets us in, and I pat him on the back as we step through the back doors.
