4. Distractions on the computer
If you use the computer regularly, distractions on the computer are just as bad as distractions in the rest of the work space. First, create a “temp” folder and put all the files on your desktop into this folder. Get into the habit of saving things in this folder rather than the desktop. Use a launcher program like Launch Bar (Mac) or Launchy (Windows) to launch your programs and files – it’s quicker and less messy than launching them from your desktop. Turn off all notifications if possible – calendar, email, Twitter and other reminders that keep you from doing the work you want to focus on. And close your browser if possible while you work on the important stuff.
