Dawson made no move toward taking up Farlowâs invitation to share supper in the cabin. Hull went but was back shortly, disgruntled. âHe didnât mean it,â he grumbled to Dawson. âHe knew you wouldnât go, or he wouldnât have made the invite.â
Dawson added, âYou just went because you wanted another look at that fancy woman.â
Fancy? Joey hadnât seen anything fancy about her. She looked as if she had been dragged through hell and out the far end.
Hull complained, âFarlow acted like he thought I had intentions.â
âYou did, didnât you? You wished, anyway.â
âMaybe, but I ainât goinâ to have Farlow kill me on account of a woman. Thereâs women everyplace. Except here.â
âIâm afraid Tolley ainât as cautious as you are.â
âTolleyâs head ainât growed to match the rest of him. If heâs got no better sense, then I wonât cry over him.â
âI donât remember you cryinâ over anybody, ever.â
âAinât nobody ever cried over me.â
That sounded reasonable to Joey, though he deemed it wise to look away so Hull could not read the thought. Beau read it and gave him a frown that warned him to be careful. Even thinking could be dangerous in a place like this.
At dark they rolled out their blankets near the creek. The trickling sound of the water was comforting until Joey heard another sound, a womanâs cry of pain from inside the cabin. He raised up on one elbow to listen. He did not hear it again.
He heard Miller Dawson, however. Dawson said quietly, âBest go to sleep, boy. Ainât none of your concern.â
âYou could do somethinâ.â
âAinât my concern either. Farlow didnât kidnap her out of a convent. She left San Antonio of her own will.â
âShe ainât stayinâ here of her own will.â
Dawson did not answer. But Beau reached across from his blankets and pinched Joeyâs arm. âWe ainât either,â he whispered, âso, damn it, keep still.â
