Paul and Gamay returned to the parking lot without stopping for any souvenirs. They found Eduardo and climbed in the back of the sedan as soon as he released the locks.

Paul thought nothing of it, but Gamay was surprised that Eduardo hadn’t jumped out to open the door for them. Not because it was necessary, but because he had done so at the hotel and then again when dropping them off below the statue.

Still, it was getting hot, and Rio was always humid. She sat in the back and pulled her seat belt on, thankful for the cool air blowing from the vents. “Thank you for waiting,” she said. “I guess it’s back to the hotel for us now.”

“Claro,” he said. “Sure thing.”

As they eased from the parking lot, Gamay reached over and put her hand on Paul’s. He turned to look at her and she smiled. For a moment they were just a couple of vacationers.

Up front Eduardo drove without saying a word. As they turned onto the Estrada das Paineiras, they passed two motorcycles aligned on the side of the road like policemen ready to chase anyone foolish enough to speed down the twisting, turning road. Gamay heard them revving their engines and pulling out behind the sedan.

She turned to look. The motorcycles had fallen in behind them, just a few car lengths back. She and Paul had been on too many assignments where they’d been attacked for her to completely dismiss the men on their bikes, but so far they’d done nothing aggressive.

She squeezed Paul’s hand to get his attention. He nodded. He’d seen them.

Eduardo had seen the motorcycles too. He seemed more concerned. Motorbikes were often used in criminal acts around Rio because they could escape through the traffic, driving between lanes and off-road, if necessary.

He kept one eye on the road and one eye on the mirror, only to be startled by the ringing of his phone. Like many drivers, he drove with a Bluetooth speaker in his ear so he could conduct conversations hands-free.

“This is Edo,” he said, using the shortened version of his name.

“You, sir, are more than a driver,” the voice on the other end of the line said.

The odd statement struck a chord in Eduardo. His mind flashed back to the man with the Turkish cigarette. Before he could answer he felt and heard a ringing in his ears. High-pitched, almost inaudible. He imagined it was the kind of thing dogs could hear.

“You, sir, are more than a driver.”

Of course he was.

“You’re a man with a mission. It’s very important that you complete it. You remember this? You understand?”

The odd tone continued in the background, but Eduardo heard it less and less. He was focused on the sound of the man’s voice.

“Get your passengers to the bottom of the hill,” the voice instructed. “You must hurry. There’s no time to lose.”

Without thinking about it, Eduardo pressed down on the accelerator. The sedan picked up speed on the descending straightaway. It didn’t become a problem until they neared the next turn.
