While crop models provide clues as to the direct impacts of climate change on agricultural production, changes in crop yields are just one dimension of a much larger globalized food system that includes commodity markets, international trade, and complex distribution networks (Vermeulen, Campbell, and Ingram 2012). All told, lower agricultural productivity and yields may have enormous economic repercussions, including higher food prices, reduced agricultural employment, and out-migration of farm laborers to nearby cities, which in turn influences labor markets and wages in receiving areas. Changes in crop yields also have vital implications for food security as well as broader consequences for poverty rates and political stability. We return to these issues in chapter 8.
