Chapter Nineteen

A

cheap hospital wheelchair is pushed up against the wall in a dimly lit room. Bailey is sitting in a folding chair with a shock collar around his neck. His nose is bloodied and there is dark bruising under his eyes. There is no doubt that his visit with the Bandoni family has not been very warm and welcoming.

Hearing the door creak open, Bailey looks over to see one of the goons approaching him.

“Haven’t had enough, huh?” Bailey says.

“Shut your yap! Boss wants to see you!” He fires back.

“Ooh, lucky me,” Bailey says mockingly.

With that, the goon hit the remote for the shock collar sending Bailey into a brief electric convulsion.

“Not feeling so lucky now, huh?”

Bailey regains his composure and says, “You’re so funny.”

He smiles and says, “Yeah, everyone tells me that,” as he’s helping Bailey to his wheelchair. Bailey is wheeled from his room and taken through a hall leading into a garden. He can see a man sitting at a table with breakfast set up for two.

As he gets closer to the table, he can smell the bacon and eggs, as well as cinnamon toast. There is a glass of orange juice in a nice crystal glass sitting next to a steaming hot cup of coffee.

Bandoni lowers his newspaper, folds it, and sets it next to his plate as Bailey is being wheeled up to the table next to him.

“What is this?” Bailey asks Bandoni.

“Breakfast. Please eat.”

“I didn’t think my stay here included the continental breakfast,” says Bailey.

“You are a very clever man,” Bandoni says. “I feel that we got off on the wrong foot.”

Bailey scoffed, “Yeah, torture is a very wrong foot to get off on.”

“Torture? You thought you were being tortured? Please. You have all fingers. You have no broken bones. A little ‘scratch’ on your head, and just a few bruises. We were being…” Bandoni twirled his fork in the air while trying to grasp the right word,” … Assertive in our communication.”

“Assertive?”

“We want to be sure you understand that what we talk to you about is to be taken seriously,” Bandoni says, passing a plate of eggs over to Bailey.

“You see, Clifford Dee is an employee of mine who is very good at his job, but has been slipping in his duties.”

Bailey begins scooping some eggs onto his plate. “So what do you want from me? I just met the guy,” He says, taking a huge bite of eggs.

“He needs someone looking out for him, and you seem perfect for that job.”

Bandoni’s attention was grabbed as a man walked into the garden and confronted one of the guards. Bandoni wipes his mouth with his napkin and excuses himself.

Bailey grabs a piece of buttered cinnamon toast as he looks on to what is a seemingly tense situation.

Bandoni became loud and blurted out “He was stopped by COPS?! He IS a cop?” Just then Bandoni pulls a gun out of his inside jacket holster and shoots one of the men. He casually walks back to the table as the guard is cleaning up the mess.
