Chapter 5

Shade didn’t know what to think about her mother’s plans. Not that it was any of her business as to what her mom did, but she was concerned about how she was going to keep an eye on Able and sleep during the day as well.

“You don’t agree with me.” Shade told her mom that it wasn’t a matter of her agreeing or disagreeing with her plans as she wasn’t Able’s mother. “But you don’t agree that I can take care of him being a vampire.”

“I don’t know what to think, to be honest with you. You said yourself that you’ll need to make sure that someone is around all the time in the event that you have to rest during the day. And while I think you’ll be able to find good safe help for that, I’m not sure why you don’t think that myself or one of the others can help you out.”

“I told you, Shade, I don’t want to burden you with raising your brother.” She told her that she’d never think it was a burden to keep an eye out for her little brother. “But you have a new mate and home. You don’t need to be saddled with a child while you’re getting to know one another.”

“I assure you that we’re not having any trouble getting to know one another any more than you and Hudson.” She smiled when her mother’s face turned a bright pink. “I didn’t mean sexually, mom. I meant just knowing each other.”

“I can’t believe that we’re having this conversation. It’s nothing like I thought we’d have when we were prisoners in our own home.” She told her she was sorry. “Don’t be. Please, don’t be sorry. If not for you, you know we’d all be dead by now. He was set to kill us and had you not called for help, I would never have met Hudson. Nor you, Cliff.”

“I think we all lucked out in that.” She watched her mom fidget with her tea. “Mom, you don’t have to pretend with me. I know that you don’t want to drink it. Just put it aside, and we’ll talk. The staff is only trying to make appearances for you. Nothing more.”

“I don’t know what to do sometimes. I love this new life, and I’m so in love with Hudson that I wonder how I got to be so lucky. But there are times when I feel like the other shoe is going to drop, so to speak. Like I’m just a moment’s notice away from something terrible happening.” She asked her mom if that was why she thought that she needed to raise Able by herself. “You know what? That might be it. I sometimes feel like Lacky is going to show up at any time and hurt us.”

“Able is the same way. Even though everyone has told him that he’s dead, he still has nightmares about him throwing cocktails at us again.” Mom said she’d not known that.
