Chief George J. Matowitz (left) is seen here in this c. 1950 photograph. Appointed May 8, 1905, Matowitz (right) served as the city’s police chief from October 16, 1930, until he died in office on November 29, 1951.

The department welcomed Chief Matowitz back after the civil service commission found no merit in charges brought against him by Mayor Burke. Matowitz would be the last chief to serve with civil service protection. Future chiefs would serve at the pleasure of the mayor.

The Fitzgeralds had a combined total of 105 years service on the Cleveland Police Department. Jim (left) served from 1938 until 1976, John (center) from 1934 to 1973, and Tom (right) served from 1942 until his death in 1971. The photograph dates from 1944.
