Chapter 13

Maggie startled awake, gasping for breath. In her panic, she failed to recognize where she was. She fumbled, searching for the light. In the process, she knocked the alarm clock off the night table.

The lights flicked on overhead, blinding her. She shielded her eyes, glancing around as her heart returned to normal speed. “Maggie? Are you all right? What is it?” Henry asked. He rushed to the bed.

“Oh, ah,” she paused, her eyes still adjusting to the light. “Nothing. Bad dream.”

“I heard you scream. You sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah,” Maggie said. Her breathing and pulse began to settle. “Yeah, I’m okay. It was just a bad dream. When I woke up, I was disoriented, forgot where I was.”

“With all that’s happened, that’s understandable.”

“What time is it? Oh, I knocked the clock over,” Maggie mumbled. She glanced at the clock strewn on the floor.

“I’ll get it. Relax, Maggie,” Henry said. He leaned over, gathering the clock from the floor and setting it on the night table. “There. It’s four thirty.”

Maggie nodded. “Sorry for waking you.”

“It’s fine. Do you think you can go back to sleep?”

Maggie took a deep breath. She nodded. “Yeah, yeah. I should be able to sleep. Sorry.”

“All right. Lay back. You sure you’re okay?” Henry asked.

Maggie nodded, smiling at him. “I’m sure, thanks.”

“No worries. You know where I am if you need me.” Henry switched off the light, leaving Maggie to sleep. Maggie settled into the bed, adjusting her pillow. Despite her breathing and heart rate returning to normal, Maggie remained unsettled by the dream. She reminded herself she was safe and wasn’t alone. Leo, Charlie, and Henry were feet away from her. The idea comforted her enough to fall asleep.

Maggie slept well into the morning, awaking after nine. The sun already lit the city from high overhead, scorching the air. Maggie sat up, perching on the edge of the bed. She trudged to the living room and kitchen in search of coffee. Leo still slept on the couch.

“Good morning, princess,” Henry said as she approached the kitchen. He handed her a mug of coffee. “Two sugars and cream just the way you like it.”

“Thank you,” she said, sinking into a chair at the table and sipping the coffee.

“And how do you like your eggs, princess?”

“Mm,” she said, taking another sip of coffee, “you’re cooking?”

“I am. Now, what’s your request? Over easy, scrambled, omelet?”

“Scrambled,” Maggie requested.

“Coming right up,” Henry said. “Did you sleep okay after your nightmare?”

“I did, thanks.”

“Nightmare?” Charlie asked. “Why didn’t you call for me, chicky. I’d have comforted you.” He wiggled his eyebrows at her.

“That may have given me another nightmare,” Maggie pronounced.

“Ouch,” Henry chuckled. “Here we are.” Henry placed a plate of eggs and toast in front of her.

“Wow, real food!” Maggie exclaimed. “I’m excited!” She picked up her fork to dig in as Leo slogged across the room, crumpling into a chair next to her. “Good morning, sleepyhead.”

“What’s so good about it?” Leo complained. “Ugh, my neck is stiff.” He rolled his neck around, wincing in pain.
