Chapter Four

Maria and Mateo took their seats near Lana and Jeremy. Lana flashed them a thumbs-up. Jeremy mouthed, “I’m so excited!” But the two cousins did not return their enthusiasm.

The lights dimmed. A woman walked onto the stage. She wore a snazzy black suit. A microphone was clipped to her collar. People with instruments sat in rows behind her. They stood as she crossed to the center of the stage.

“Buenas tardes,” she said. The people behind her sat down. “We have a very special show for you today. It includes some familiar songs that might get your feet tapping.”

“Doubt it!” Mateo whispered.

“I am a conductor,” the woman onstage said. “The people behind me are musicians. As a group, they are called an orchestra. And all of you are our audience.” She squinted against the spotlight and waved. This made Maria and Mateo smile. They shyly waved back with their class.
