Here is one with bigger notches. They work too, but I have found that smaller notches work better for beginners.

If this doesn’t work for you at first don’t give up. You will get it.

CHAPTER SIX

Whittlin’ Treen

Amazingly, the “wand” can be used to make practical things.

Treen are utensils like forks, spoons and ladles that are usually whittled out of green wood and are meant to be used. Green wood is wood that has not been allowed to dry. The fact that the results of your whittlin’ can actually be used makes this kind of work extra special.

The easiest piece of treen, and one that many people who wouldn’t think of themselves as whittlers have made, or tried to make, is a twig fork for roasting a wiener or a marshmallow. The same basic fork can be made a lot smaller for eating things that need to be poked in order to be picked up, like say, sardines or small pieces of cheese.
