Chapter Eleven

Parnell was still angry with her. He hardly spoke to her. In fact, he’d been avoiding her the entire day, which just left her steaming.

Why was it so difficult for him to understand that I needed to keep him safe?

The mob had no sympathy with anyone, not even one of their own. In fact, that's exactly what they used when they needed to bring their enemies to their knees. Kacie couldn’t comprehend exactly what it was they wanted from Colt, but it was evident that he wasn’t bending under pressure.

Her uncle thought he could scare her off but he made one fundamental mistake. He didn’t factor in the rage and hate a young girl, deprived of her teenage years—her entire life since then—had held inside her, festering over time. Now, she knew exactly where to aim that hatred and no one would stand in her way to achieve what she craved.

Retribution.

Family or not, he had to die. Neither Seth nor Parnell would have that honor. It was hers and hers alone. Ryan Caldwell was walking a tightrope. One that was about to snap and plunge him into the arms of hell, once and for all—at her hand.

She sighed heavily as she followed Parnell, past a full restaurant, toward Club Wicked Cove. It had been a battle to get him to agree to bring her to the club. Especially, since he kept silent dogmatically.

Well, hell’s bells, how else am I ever going to learn about sex? Besides, he promised.

Kacie curbed her thoughts that reprimanded her for being facetious. She wanted to move on. Maybe the few days she’d spent back in the same hell had finally yanked her from a quagmire of muck she’d been sinking into for years. She wasn’t naive to believe she would ever forget the horrid experience and the inhumane way those men had treated her, but she was ready to leave it in the past; to replace the nightmares with pleasant dreams. Her future was all she wanted to focus on. And the name on top of her to-do list in finding happiness was—Parnell Oliver.

God forbid if he tried to stop her. She squared her shoulders as she stepped into the dimly lit reception area. She was Senior Agent Kacie Harris, who wasn’t scared to dive head first into any dangerous situation. Now, it was time to dig deep and find the same courage that drove her career, into her private life. She’d had enough of feeling sorry for herself and blaming the whole world for the unfairness of how she’d been treated. It had happened. Nothing she could do would ever change that.

Except killing Ryan Caldwell.

That would give her satisfaction and closure to those vile memories, once and for all.
