In contrast to the American Dream, the Chinese Dream is not only about personal achievement, but even more about ânational rejuvenation.â In this way, the article links nationalism and patriotism with people's society instead of civil society. The century of humiliation has left a deep trauma within the Chinese population, which serves as a strong basis for nationalism. Therefore, it is not surprising that nationalism and patriotism still play a large role in contemporary Chinese public discourse.
Besides the symbolic code of Chinese versus foreign, a second binary from the background representationsâpublic versus privateâalso appears in this article. While people's society is about the entire population, civil society is only about citizens or those with property; while people's society is socialism, civil society is capitalism; while people's society focuses on the public, civil society focuses on the private (Qiaoan 2019). The following excerpt is illustrative of this position:
Compared with civil society in the West, people's society is composed of basic principles such as public ownership, public welfare, fairness, and justice. The âpublicâ is opposite to the âprivateâ and âpeopleâ are the opposite of âcitizens.â âCitizensâ highlights private rights/selfishness; âpeopleâ highlights public interest and public welfare [â¦]
