Chapter 9

Frustration coursed through Nadia at the realization that Elluin had indeed left his house and abandoned it. She’d broken in again the night following her failed attempt at stopping the necromancers. Well, broken in was a stretch since the door had been unlocked from the previous night. She was there without an invitation though, but the police never questioned such things of the Wraiths should a curious neighbor call them.

Nadia moved quietly through all floors of the house but found no one and nothing to hint at where they could have gone. Since she had no way of knowing the names of Elluin’s co-conspirators, she couldn’t check their addresses either. Elluin’s house was turning into a dead-end and unfortunately, she was to blame for it. If only she’d blocked the basement door before running after Phoebe. This was a lack of judgment the Wraiths prided themselves in never having. She’d been foolish and rash.

Nadia bristled as she stared down at the untidy collection of baby clothes in Phoebe’s room at the top of the house. Nadia knew she needed to set things right and stop this. Both for her own pride and for the sake of Flynn. Her pride was inconsequential in all regards. That was what Wraiths were trained to think. But in training them that way, their pride was molded into the way they lived their lives, bound in duty and honor. If someone wanted to hurt a Wraith where it mattered, making them fail at the standards of the Wraiths was the best place to start.

Still, Nadia couldn’t sulk for long. She didn’t truly know how to sulk either. Flynn was her priority. So was the reputation of the Wraiths and a dead Wraith walking around and causing havoc was not good for their collective standing in the city.

She realized she was staring at a bright green onesie. The child was a consideration she hadn’t factored in. Flynn had gone and done what he was not supposed to do. He’d gotten tied to something outside the Wraiths, something important enough to cause a rift in his loyalties.

Nadia doubted the child had been planned. At least not from Flynn’s side. She turned and took in the image of the two parents with their baby. He obviously cared for both his girlfriend and their child though, planned or not. But this could have cost him his place among the Wraiths, and like every one of them, he’d been raised and trained as a Wraith since the age of twelve. He hadn’t left the Queen’s guard of his own free will either. Nadia wondered if he ever would have. It was likely that Phoebe would have ended up as his dark secret for the rest of her life. Or even more likely, that their relationship wouldn’t have lasted with all the hiding and skulking about to protect Flynn from dishonor. Maybe he’d had a plan? Maybe, like Nadia, he had aspired to become a Ghost instead. To be allowed to have a family.
