Chapter 9 – To Do What Is Right

Ru returned to the house to find the whole family: Rai, Bromun, Pele, Rale and Motsey down on the floor in front of the house playing some sort of game that requited a large board, a twenty-sided Pandemian dice, a set of wooden placards, and colorful clay markers to move about the board.

Even though her back was to him when he entered, Pele sensed him with the link and turned to greet him. “Oh, you're back, Ru.” Through the link, she added, Is everything alright? You kept your end closed pretty tightly most of the day. You haven't done that in a while.

“Good evening.” he said to the room in general. To Pele, he sent, I am fine, Miss Pele. I merely wanted to spare you my annoyance at some of the dullards of this city given the stress you've been under.

Before, he'd never given much thought to the fact that the link let him lie to his masters without retribution unless specifically ordered not to. Had he been the architect of the spell, that would have been one of the first hard-coded provisions, and he knew Gloryfall wouldn't have overlooked it.

So why was it not just possible, but trivial?

“We're all going out to dinner after the game's over,” Rai spoke up. “There's a place that does food like they do in the dragon cults: flat breads, skewered meat, lots of sauces... I hear they're as delicious as what you can actually get out there in Taunaun. You're welcome to come with us if you'd like.”

Ru dipped his head in thanks. “I'll see if I'm not busy when you depart.”

Motsey waved at the dark wizard, readily displaying the three cards in his hand to all his opponents. “Hi, Mr. Ru! You wanna play with us?”

“Hero's Journey,” Bromun supplied as Ru squinted at the board, trying to figure out what it was. “You move around the board and where you land can get you a draw from the deck. There are cards for monsters, treasures and hazards. You use treasures to defeat monsters and hazards.”

“Isn't that a bit close to some of our actual lives?” Ru asked flatly.

Bromun shrugged. “In this you can't die, you just get sent back squares.”

“It's no Stones and Ashes, but it is fun,” Pele offered, then through the link, And you don't have to worry about me anymore Ru. I'm alright now. But I really do appreciate the concern.

Think nothing of it, Miss Pele. To the others, he said. “Some other time perhaps. I have some research to perform.”

“Still?” asked Pele, forgetting to use the link this time.”

Ru bared his teeth in something that could be considered a smile. “Heh. Always, Miss Pele. If not for the... issue I focused on before, then on new arrays, new applications of existing arrays. I did not become the Rune Breaker by lazing about. Besides, in my investigations into the nature of the link, I met a group who have opened my eyes to a whole new branch of spellworking I never considered.
