What Goes Around Comes Around

By

Death. One word that we use so casually these days. I hear

the word death as often as I hear the word hello. If death is really all that casual, then what’s the big deal? Why do people spend so much money on funerals? If you really hated the person, then you should have just said something; you don’t need to go and celebrate their nonexistence. And, even if you feel you need to pay your respects whatever you do, just don’t go and get drunk at a funeral. That is just unforgivable. I assume, though, only my mother would do that.

To my mom, my uncle’s death was like ordering Chinese food, a regular routine: ‘Come on, dear; loosen up. It’s not like your uncle dies every day. Have a few drinks. They’ll take the edge off of his death.’

What a loser. What kind of person says something like that at a funeral? Not to mention a funeral for her brother. Well, I’ll admit that my mom does have some logic. My uncle does not die every day, but many other people do. Come to think of it death really isn’t that much of a big deal. The truth is that we really are dying. Every breath you take, every move you make, you get one step closer to death.

We spend our whole life just simply trying to do everything we possibly can. When are people going to realize that we are only on this world for a short time; what’s the point? Every breath is a choice, so why not just stop it now.

Sam deeply inhaled. I will stop it now. She crouched down in her seat still, trying her best to stop breathing. Her damp, light auburn hair clung to the sides of her face. It left puddles right at the edge of her rib cage, where the sleekly wet hair ended. Her pale eyes peered out the window and watched as the rain came pattering on the car.

The truck made a screeching sound as it swerved to the side of the road. The swift motion forced Sam to exhale. As the truck tried to ease onto the road, another vehicle came whipping by. Her family’s scratched red pickup trunk rammed into the passing car, and her head flung into the back of her mother’s seat. Sam’s eyes went fuzzy, and a black light soon enveloped her mind.

Sam awoke to a muttering of doctors and nurses. Although she didn’t want to admit it, her first thought fell upon her mother. “Where is my, Mom,” Sam burst out. The room fell to complete silence. The nurses’ eyes shifted skittishly to the ground. A tense glance passed between the doctors. “Will someone please tell me what’s going on?” Sam now spoke with irritation, and she made sure that she showed it.

A tall, attractive, and husky doctor stepped forward. Sam slid slowly down in the hospital bed. “Your mother has suffered a mild wrist injury. She is in medical testing right now, but you should be able to see her soon.
