Oh. hello, I said in my startled-but-calm voice.
Hey, he said, surprised to see me. Dont tell me you wiped out again, he teased.
No. I was just . . . looking for this, I said, bending down and picking up the first thing my hand landed on, which happened to be an Xll womens sports bra from the lost-and-found carton.
I dont know who turned more red when I held it uphim or me.
So, uh, you work here? he asked.
I cleared my throat. Well, on Sundays I do. I tried to think of something else to say. The other days I go to school. Not on Saturdays, but during the week . . . Pleaseshutup, pleaseshutup, I said to myself.
As Phoo continued to make more of a mess, I tried not to stare at how Adams Bob Dylan T-shirt hugged his tan arms in just the right places.
Another Dylan fanjust like BklynBoy. I wondered if Noah liked him, too.
Thuds now joined the clapping and the chanting, along with an occasional wail.
What are they doing in there? asked Adam.
I dared myself to look up. Sometimes, if they get really blissed out from the chanting, some of them get up and start jumping around the room, I explained before looking back down again.
You should come check it out one day! said Phoo. Its amazing. Think of your best acid trip ever and multiply it by a hundred.
Uh, yeah, maybe, said Adam, which had a not on your life undertone to it.
We were all quiet again.
Thats a cool T-shirt, he said a moment later.
Thanks, I said, my heart rate revving up even higher. I was wearing my ANXIETY BURNS A LOT OF CALORIES one, which, at that moment, couldnt have been a truer statement. My mouth opened like I was going to say something else, but I couldnt think of anything, so I closed it again. GreatI was turning into a guppy.
So do you do yoga? Adam asked.
I couldnt believe he was continuing to attempt to have a conversation with me when it was painfully obvious that I was socially handicapped.
Me?
Yeah.
Another lort. Um, no.
Being with her breath is still somewhat frightening to Cindy, Phoo piped up. How about you, Adam? Have you allowed yourself to enjoy the many benefits that yoga has to offer? He sounded like a bad infomercial.
Actually . . . Adam began to say.
. . . he plays soccer, I said. And basketball. And baseball. He doesnt have time for yoga. So much for not coming off as a stalker. It got quiet again and I went back to looking at the desk.
Hey, you ran off the other day before I had a chance to tell you I really liked that piece you wrote for the paper about how stupid the prom is, he said.
I looked up. Howd you know I wrote it? I asked warily.
Um, lets see . . . because youre Cindy Gold?
But how do you know my name? I asked. Now I was just plain mystified.
Phoos head was going back and forth like he was watching a tennis match.
