Chapter Twelve

Scarlet

I return to my room as night falls. Where is Ana? She was supposed to be back by now, but she is nowhere to be seen.

I hope that she does not attempt to return to the Palace at night as I close my door behind me, and hope no one takes note of my dalliances around the Palace. I doubt they will - being around the servants means more chances for me to choose to drink their blood - but I don't want anyone questioning what I'm doing and finding out about Cin.

There is a knock on my door, and I open it to find two Council guards beyond.

"The Council requests your audience in the main hall."

I know that 'request' is merely a kind word for 'order', but I keep my composure, nodding my head as if the request is nothing, before stepping through the door and heading out into the corridor, taking long strides that force the guards to hurry. This is my domain, not theirs, and I will not have them comfortable while they try to intimidate me.

I stride into the hall, my head held high as I take my place beside my mothers, standing by their thrones as I look down on the Council members below. Though, despite their positions, they hardly seem fazed, the woman in front examining me coldly, her gaze causing goosebumps to form over my arms neck.

My fingers twitch, but I manage to hold myself back from hugging my arms to my chest, refusing to move even an inch under her gaze.

But then the doors behind her swing wide open, and another Council member appears, his hand on Ana's arm.

The woman in front smiles as Ana is brought forward. "As I was saying, Your Majesties, it is clear that your daughter lied to us about her reluctance to drink human blood. Her thrall was caught returning to the Palace earlier, bringing others with her for your daughter to feed on."

"Ana is not my thrall," I say, glaring down at the Council member. "I needed information out of her, that is all."

"Information?"

"Yes, information. I was hoping to find out more about those who will be attending my ball."

"Well, in that case, I apologise for my mistake. I had not considered such an unorthodox answer. Oh, well... If the girl is not yours, I'm sure one of our party will find use for her."

"What? No! Just let her go."

The Council member narrows her eyes. "Why should we do that? She has seen us here, and she knows of our true nature. You may have entranced her, Princess, but without drinking human blood, we cannot be certain of your strength. We cannot know that the entrancement will hold, and as you have already enthralled her, we cannot be sure that entrancement from anyone else will hold. She may reveal our existence to the outside world if she is let go."

"Then keep her in the Palace, but do not drink from her."

"Your mothers opened their home to us, Princess.
