In the new world of women’s sports in the 1920s, eurythmics and interpretive dance were seen as healthy athletic activities. As these pictures show, University of Cincinnati coeds placed their performance props on the football field and then danced up a storm. The serious intent, however, was to show the gracefulness and athleticism of the human form, and to relate it to Greek classical expression.

The photographs shown here are as artistic as the actions they capture. In one, Cincinnati coeds perform a dance movement in classical costume. Archery was a typical campus sport for women, as it had been since the 1890s. The photo shows off the strong, beautiful form of the coed archer.
