ALTHOUGH EACH ONE OF them was keenly aware they’d just been robbed of a fight, the friends did as Carter asked and went to wait for him in the tunnels that ran beneath the school—walking through the darkness, until they reached what remained of the PC penitentiary.

“Okay, this feels like asking for trouble,” Molly said bluntly, running her fingers along the broken bars. “I get that it’s quiet, but do we really need to wait here?”

Angel nodded seriously, bearing a striking resemblance to her daughter.

“Don’t linger near the cages,” she muttered under her breath, chanting the words like she was resurrecting some old quote. “You linger near the cages, someone puts you inside.”

Gabriel shot her a look, then slipped an arm over her shoulder.

The place itself was in shambles—still torn to pieces from the prison break.

The second they’d heard what had happened, Rae and the others had rushed to the school and watched the video footage themselves. While it was more than a little unsettling to see each of those nightmarish inmates step out of their cells, what was even worse was the way Barnes did it.

There wasn’t any fanfare. There weren’t any speeches or some great show of force. He simply walked down into the tunnels, lifted his hands, and thereby nullified every whisper of ink in the area. A man with a strength tatù broke through the doors. The place was empty a minute later.

Carter had attempted to fortify it with something a little stronger, but the sheer weight of it was making it incredibly difficult to rebuild.

“Remind me again,” Luke murmured, kicking a slab with his shoe, “what is this stuff?”

Devon walked over to join him, hands dug in his pockets.

“It’s this new kind of ore they found in these Kenyan mines,” he answered, kicking at one himself. It didn’t matter how much strength he put behind it, the thing wouldn’t move. “It’s meant to be the next big thing, revolutionize all sorts of industries. But Carter also had it...blessed.”

Luke flashed him a strange look.

“Blessed?” he repeated incredulously. “I know you guys like to tease me about growing up in a monastery, but honestly, this place is so much worse.”

“It’s not actually blessed.” Rae laughed. “Carter just took it to this retired field agent who used to work here. The guy kind of...bestowed his ink upon it.”

Luke shook his head blankly. “What does that mean? What’s the ink?”

Devon gestured him forward with a little smile. “Try it and find out.”

For a second, it looked like Luke was going to take him up on the offer. But with a caution the rest of them most definitely lacked, he shoved Gabriel forward instead.

“You heard him.”

The assassin flashed a grin and stepped forward, kicking one of the nearest pieces, before being thrown with exactly as much force into the opposite wall. He hit it with a crunch, cursing loudly.

“Bloody Ackerton...” He picked himself up slowly, rubbing his arm. “Tell me again why anyone has contact with that man? His ink makes me want to set myself on fire.
