Everything was cold. It was the first complete thought my brain managed since Five… I jumped, as my mind raced back to the feeling of his teeth sinking into my flesh. They cut through my skin easily, their sharp points making themselves at home in my muscle.

My eyes were heavy, glued shut as I fought to get them working. A hand grasped mine and lifted it up. As easy as could be as I laid there struggling just to make my eyelids work.

Stupid body betrayed me when I needed it most.

“Emma?” My name was barely a whisper, a sigh on my cheek.

My head lolled to the side, toward the voice, not fully cooperating, but showing the limited amount of control I had over it.

“Emma, can you hear me?”

The slightest moan escaped my lips.

The hand grasping mine tightened and then another touched my brow. It was fire compared to the coolness of my skin. Too hot…or maybe I was too cold.

“You scared me back there.” The voice was close to my ear again. “I thought I…” he coughed as his words cut off.

He swallowed hard then a puff of air hit my face.

I tried once more to force my eyes open, to talk, to move, but nothing responded. A ripple of panic surged through me as I drifted back to the fall down the stairs. But I moved after. I stood. I wasn’t paralyzed, just locked inside my body.

Which at the moment was a hell of a lot worse.

“You’ll be safe here.” Holden’s voice sliced through my thoughts. “I should have checked for a tracker before, but I… They won’t take you from a crowded place.”

An image of the dank and congested street I was on seconds before being kidnapped flashed in my mind.

Crowded places didn’t mean shit.

“If you can hear me in there just…be careful.”

Something hot, like the hand on my forehead, pressed against my lips. Only it was soft, melding with mine in a gentle wave. It couldn’t be…he wouldn’t…

“Goodbye, Emma.” His words were like embers on my lips as they moved against my mouth.

He did. He stole a kiss from me while I was catatonic. Rage built in my chest, conflicting with the tingling in my toes and the flopping of butterflies in my belly.

My body felt as if it was being pulled in five separate directions. None of which made any sense to the fuzziness in my brain.

The fire leaked from my skin as my hand dropped, cold and alone. He left me. He left me wherever I was after everything we’d been through.

Darkness grabbed at my consciousness, its black tendrils digging deep, dragging me down with it back into the murkiness of oblivion.

Goodbye, Emma. It was the last thing my mind held on to before there was nothing.
