Chapter Five

It was dark by the time the taxi pulled up outside the mall. I slid from the back seat with Cash and Fay quietly talking close behind me. Streetlamps and lights from the store illuminated the snow dusting the pavement. More snowflakes drifted from the blanket of cloud looming over our heads. People of all ages were rushing in and out of the mall, pushing shopping carts filled with food, toys, wrapping paper and decorations, down the ramp.

We took the steps leading up to the sliding glass doors. For the first three, salt crunched under our feet. Golden decorations and lights glistened from the branches of two Christmas trees, drawing my attention to their position in the floor-to-ceiling display windows on either side of the automatic doors. A young boy, about the age of four, stood at the base of one tree, shuffling through the presents until his mother waved her hand, calling him as she headed down the ramp with a shopping cart full of groceries.

The doors parted and loud, cheerful Christmas music filled my ears along with the low hum of people’s chatter, also known as the last-minute Christmas rush. Tinsel and baubles hung from the ceiling along with Merry Christmas signs written in fancy white script with gold or red backgrounds. More tinsel lined the sides of the stores and hung from their ceilings.

It’d been a couple of years since I had ventured into the mall around Christmas. Dad mostly did the grocery shopping after work, so that left very little need for me to go shopping. It was interesting to see that not much had really changed in the way of decorations. Apart from the banners and baubles, everything appeared like it had been when I was little, which was both welcoming and disappointing. Welcoming because it was familiar, and disappointing because I had expected to see something new after all these years.

A group of people headed toward an escalator across from us, leading upstairs where most of the retail grocery stores were located. Two Christmas trees decorated in red and silver sat on either side of a bench, where a couple of men sat, obviously waiting.

The metallic sound of shopping carts clashing together made me turn my head to where Cash stood behind the line of shopping carts positioned alongside the automatic doors. He yanked one away from the rest and pushed it toward his mother.

Fay smiled. “Thank you, honey. Are you boys going shopping while I get the groceries? Is there anything either of you need or want me to get? Harper?”

“No thank you, Mrs. Klin.”

“Oh Harper, you’ve known me long enough to call me Fay,” she said, placing her handbag in the child seat.

I smiled awkwardly. I’d always been taught to call my elders by their last name. Cash stood by my side and turned toward me with his hands in the pockets of his coat. “Why don’t you go and have a look around. I’ll catch up.”

“Okay.” I nodded—I knew what he was up to.
