Julie slipped into the pew with Matt, Marc, and Luke just moments before the choir began to sing. She’d never been so exhausted. Getting herself out of the house every morning was challenge enough, but adding five small people and a bathroom disaster to the mix almost made it a near impossibility. It had taken a great deal of effort, but the children were in church. A smile tugged at her mouth. Joey would be proud.

She’d tossed the wet towels into the bathtub after determining the water had stopped. The doorbell rang and Noah had opened the door to Robin’s friend, who had come in search of Julie. Evidently, Luke had been overcome by remorse and had cried for Auntie Hulie until they’d located her.

Moments later, they stood in the hallway outside his classroom. His sobs and “I torry, Auntie Hulie” tugged at Julie’s heart. She held him close and whispered about destroying other people’s possessions.

Once he’d calmed down, she took him back into the classroom. Julie had watched the kids shower their teacher with Christmas gifts, embarrassed that she hadn’t thought to buy gifts for the children’s teachers. Of course, Mari could have had that on the list. She’d never know.

After their Sunday school lesson, they’d worked on a craft project. When Julie offered to help, Natalie Porter had quickly accepted.

“I don’t mind the lessons but I don’t like crafts at all.”

Surprised, Julie had exclaimed, “Really? After that cake you made for the cast party, I figured you’d try anything. I’ve never seen anything so incredible.”

Natalie grinned as she continued to place red pipe cleaners on the table. “Thanks. Too bad the kids can’t craft with cake decorations. We could really make progress if that were the case.”

“That reminds me. I’d love to order a couple of cakes for Christmas. Are you booked up?”

“Pretty much. I promised Mari two cakes already. Do you think you’ll need more?”

Julie shook her head. “I didn’t realize she’d ordered them. Luke flushed my lifeline down the toilet last night. Mari had listed everything for me. Now it’s gone.”

Natalie glanced at Luke and back at her. “What will you do?”

Julie shrugged. “The best I can.”

“Let me know if I can help,” Natalie said as she assisted a child with glue.

Julie appreciated the woman’s offer. “You can join us for dinner if you don’t have other plans.”

“I have friends coming down for the holiday. Thanks for asking, though.”

“Bring them along.”

“I’ll let you know,” Natalie had promised.

Emulating the adults around them, the boys pulled hymnals from the back of the pew. Julie smiled when Luke held his upside down and sang the traditional Christmas hymn along with the choir. When the song ended, all three boys sat and laid the books on the seat beside them. No doubt they understood bad behavior would not be tolerated in the sanctuary.

The choir sang and then there was another congregational song. The music director announced a solo and then young Robin moved to the microphone. Her solo about the gift God gave His people at Christmas moved Julie to tears.
