The bell above the café door jingled, drawing Matilda's attention from the coffee maker. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Peter enter, his expression unreadable. He approached the counter, his steps measured and slow.

"Good morning, Peter," Matilda greeted him, her voice wavering slightly. "The usual?"

Peter nodded, his gaze flickering to the menu board before settling back on her face. "Yes, please."

As Matilda prepared his coffee, an awkward silence stretched between them. The easy rapport they had developed over the past few weeks seemed to have vanished, replaced by a palpable tension.

"How are the Christmas event plans coming along?" Peter asked, his tone polite but distant.

Matilda's hands faltered as she reached for a lid. "Oh, they're...they're coming along." She forced a smile, trying to ignore the tightness in her chest. "I've been meaning to ask for your input on a few things."

Peter's brow furrowed, and he glanced away. "I'm not sure how much help I can be. I've been rather busy lately."

The words stung, and Matilda felt a lump form in her throat. Had she misinterpreted his interest in the event? In her? She set his coffee on the counter, her fingers trembling slightly.

"I understand," she said softly, her gaze downcast. "I don't want to impose."

Peter's expression softened, and he reached out, his fingertips grazing her hand. "Matilda, I'm sorry. I didn't mean..."

But Matilda pulled away, her heart constricting. "It's fine, Peter. Really. I shouldn't have assumed..."

She turned, busying herself with wiping down the already clean countertop. Behind her, she heard Peter sigh, the bell jingling as he left the café.

As the door clicked shut, Matilda's shoulders sagged, and she braced herself against the counter. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, and she blinked them back furiously.

Had she been foolish to think that there could be something more between her and Peter? Had she let her own loneliness cloud her judgment?

Matilda's thoughts swirled, and she felt a deep ache in her chest. She had thought that maybe, just maybe, God had brought Peter into her life for a reason. But now, as the distance between them grew, she couldn't help but wonder if she had been mistaken.

With a heavy heart, Matilda turned back to her work, trying to push aside the hurt and confusion. She had been through worse, she reminded herself. She would get through this, too.

Even if it meant facing the future alone.
