George Washington Highlight of Elementary School Program

by Sue Ora Bigelow

Apart from being a time when Mossy Creek celebrates its memories, Christmas is when all our traditions seem to gang up, draw a line in the dirt—or snow, depending on the weather that year—and dare us to change a one of them.

One of our brightest traditions is the Christmas Program held at Mossy Creek Elementary. It’s invariably high entertainment, and this year’s was no exception. Every dad-blamed kid in the school was in it, which brought out every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle and cousin who lives within driving distance.

If you missed it, I’m sorry, but to wet your whistle for next year, here are a few highlights of this year’s program:

Forget the three wise men, the three kings and the three shepherds. The kids in Mrs. Anderson’s third grade class decided if three was good, a dozen would be better. You’ve never seen so much gold, frankincense and myrrh in all your life!

If the fourth grade’s herd of papier-mâché stage camels ever gets loose, they’ll clean out every fruit stand from the mountains to Atlanta.

Little Seth Bainbridge made an outstanding second-grade Santa, even though he forgot his lines a couple of times. Don’t fret over his performance, however, because he was saved by the quick prompting of his friendly reindeer, Dasher.

The fifth grade received the most applause and a rousing, impromptu singing of the Star-Spangled Banner by the audience when they presented the very patriotic story of Gen. George Washington crossing the Delaware on the evening of December 25, 1776. Kudos, Mrs. Dee Thrasher, fifth grade teacher, for thinking outside the traditional Christmas box.
