Chapter Eight

Kyle was in a pile of snow.

A pile of snow and a pile of pain.

But he couldn’t get a full breath of air, couldn’t understand what had happened. The ladder was not propped against the oak tree. And he was not Super Dad, climbing down steady and sure.

He was here, on his back, in the snowbank by the driveway to the big house. And he hurt.

Everywhere.

Tentatively he flexed his fingers, then raised his arms—one, then the other.

Painful, but bearable.

Then he moved his legs.

“Aaaagggghhh!” The cry exploded from him and his heart thundered. Adrenaline poured into his veins. Icy sweat drenched him. He twisted his upper body to one side, a hand against his mouth, and fought down nausea.

The pain was white-hot and biting, like nothing he’d ever known.

He tried to breathe normally, tried to think.

There had been that idiot, racing down the road, blasting his horn, and Kyle had turned and—

He ground his teeth together. He knew all too well who the real idiot was.

And he knew his leg was broken.

With his right hand, nearly frozen without a glove, he grabbed for his belt holster.

No phone.

Maybe it had fallen off when he landed. He clawed an arm across the ground near his right side. Then his left. Another hit of adrenaline gushed into his system and he yanked the antler cap off. Without moving his leg a millimeter, he raised himself on his elbows and trained the flashlight attached to his cap on the snow around him.

No phone.

It must have been knocked off by a branch.

Which meant he couldn’t call 911. Couldn’t call the church. Couldn’t tell anyone he wouldn’t be there to pick up April after practice.

He lowered himself back to the ground. Then a worse thought slammed into his brain and his chest tightened. Even after his leg was in a cast, he wouldn’t be able to drive. He’d broken his right leg.

He wouldn’t be able to take April to practice or her performance. Wouldn’t be able to drive to the store or pick up the last gifts he’d planned or fix dinner or do laundry. Christmas morning would be the two of them, eating cold hot dogs, sitting in the living room in dirty clothes, with him probably not even showered.

The perfect Christmas was a perfect catastrophe.

“Help! Hellllllllp!” he yelled as loudly as he could.

It was useless.

Day eight of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” boomed out from the speakers. No way anyone could hear him over those blasted maids a-milking.

And no way he could wait until the music ended or until someone came looking for him. April needed him.

And frankly, he needed painkillers.

He would have to move to where he could get someone’s attention. The people in the cars along the road, enjoying the light show, were too far away. Even if he made it to his cottage, he didn’t have a landline. He’d have to get to Lanie.

Kyle tugged his knit cap back on, shifted his body, and looked at the main house. He didn’t remember her leaving, but all the lights were out.
