Chapter Ten

The next day in the late afternoon, Cody stood beside Rue at the back of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church. The “Wedding March” was being played by three bagpipers, so loudly that the stained glass shuddered in the five arched window frames on either side of the pews.

He shifted nervously as he watched the bride in her lacy white gown sail down the flower-draped aisle toward her groom who was wearing a kilt. Poor guy. He looked as if his toothpick legs were about to collapse.

Marriage was a deal that Cody would never make. Let other men get suckered into this primitive ritual with friends and family standing guard to make sure the vows would be fulfilled. As far as he was concerned, “I do” really meant “I won’t.” He’d heard the rules plenty of times. I won’t…ever look at another woman. I won’t…be bored with eating meatloaf at home every night. I won’t…resent the intrusion on my time, being constantly monitored.

Not for him. He glanced down at Rue. Last night, their lovemaking had been phenomenal—even more so because there was no obligation or expectation.

They’d come to the Scottish wedding for two reasons. The first was business. Rue wanted to put in an appearance here and at the reception so people would remember who had baked the wedding cake. The second involved their investigation. The father of the bride was a police chief, which meant that several of the people here—including Danny—had been at Lindahl’s house on the day of the murder.

At the front of the church, the minister began to recite the ceremony. Cody had seen enough. “Do we have to watch?”

She shook her head and tiptoed toward a side door that led away from the sanctuary. In a moment, they were outside the church, standing in a courtyard with a stone fountain in the center and statues of saints tucked into small niches around the edges.

The weather had turned cooler, more typical of December. Snow was predicted, and Cody was looking forward to spending tomorrow at home in his condo with Rue in his bed.

She looked cute today. After dropping off the tartan wedding cake at the downtown hotel where the reception would be held, they’d stopped at her duplex where she’d changed into a classic gray pant suit with pinstripes and a soft pink blouse that matched the bloom in her cheeks. Her long brown hair was twisted up on her head. A few wisps escaped and curled delicately on her nape.

He leaned down to inhale the vanilla scent that emanated from her and planted a little kiss below her ear.

She turned her head quickly, and he found himself kissing her lips. It was a very pleasant place to be.

Mel the bodyguard stalked toward them. Though Rue had dismissed him last night, Mel was reinstated after Tyler’s murder. He grumbled under his breath, “Give it a rest. Can’t you two keep your hands off each other?”

“Why should we?” Rue asked. Her eyes were wide and deceptively innocent. “Weddings are supposed to be romantic.
