Memorial Day Weekend, 1969

“You got thirty seconds to get your butt on stage, Lena. Hurry up!”

A frightened Lena Thumble rose from her chair. With gut knotting trepidation, she strode from her dressing room, her embroidered bell bottoms flapping around her feet as she hurried to the stage. Breathing slow and deep, she reminded herself of her purpose. She flipped her long copper brown hair behind her and prayed it wouldn’t get caught in her guitar strings.

“Welcome to the West Side Night Club,” she spoke into the microphone in spite of her jitters. Her fingers strummed out cords across the strings of her instrument. The music resounded through the night club and sent a few patrons to the dance floor. This caused her to breathe easier, but just a little.

Swaying to the rhythm, she somehow managed to sing. Granted her bed was in Seattle, Washington, but on stage was the place she dreamed of calling home. First she had to get past her anxiety of performing in front of crowds. That was a must because she had a message she wanted to proclaim to the world.

The first song in the set came to an end and a round of hearty applause filled her ears. Lena wasted no time in beginning another as she searched the crowd for a friendly face. She found him. Six feet tall. Broad shoulders. Straight blond hair that would make Troy Donahue jealous.

She had never seen him before. Could he be one of the few groupies that had begun to cluster around her after a set? She shifted her focus back to the song at hand.

For her, the music was about art, and there was no room in her agenda for the shadier side of rock and roll, namely drugs, alcohol and one night stands. There were too many important things to do, like educating people about the war and raising awareness regarding women’s rights.
