Chapter 7

The following day…

Christian stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows lining the east wall in Delta Team’s conference room. He slid an inconspicuous glance to his watch and sighed.

The video conference with Ryker was scheduled to start at seven-thirty. It was seven-thirty-six, and Ryker still had yet to make an appearance.

“Maybe he forgot.”

Facing the long oval table—and the men who were sitting in its red leather chairs—he countered Rocky’s benefit-of-the-doubt comment. “Ryker doesn’t forget business meetings.” He just didn’t. “But it’s possible something came up at work that pulled his attention away. We’ll give it ten more minutes, then I’m callin’ it.”

“Sounds fair.” Rocky nodded.

“Ten, hell.” Jagger chimed in. “I’d give the guy five. Max.”

“Trust me.” Christian moved his attention to the former CCT. “If it was anyone other than Ryker, I wouldn’t even give them that long.”

The dark-haired man gave a flippant shrug as if to say “Whatever”. But that was Jagger.

A total enigma, the man had more experience and specialized training than any other man in on the team. Navy SEAL, included. He could put boots on the ground, snipe a tango from record-breaking distances, scuba, snowmobile, and fly just about any aircraft known to man.

Yet the impressive man had made it clear to their boss during Delta’s conception that he wanted no part in being in charge. When Christian had asked Jagger about it later, all the other man would say was that he wanted to be part of a team, not lead it.

Christian, on the other hand, had been thrilled when McQueen had offered him the top spot. Here he was, almost a year later, and he was still loving his job.

Not the only thing you love.

Megan’s sweet face immediately filled his mind’s eye, just as it had the previous umpteen times since yesterday’s sidewalk confession. Not only had the sexy brunette filled his dreams to the point he’d woken up hard as fuck and frustrated as hell, but she’d also invaded the majority of his waking thoughts all damn day.

And like all those other times, he forced the enticing image away so he could focus on work. Or…what was supposed to be work.

“Tell you what.” He addressed the entire room. “I’ll try calling Ryker one more time. If he doesn’t answer, we’ll assume he got called away on something else and can’t—”

Right on cue, the giant flatscreen mounted high on the north wall came to life.

“Hey, guys.” Jason Ryker’s face filled the center of the screen. “I apologize for being late. We had a situation arise that required my immediate attention.”

“No problem.” Christian greeted the man who’d scheduled the meeting. “Everyone’s here except Brody. He’s working protection detail overseas.”

“I’m aware of King’s bodyguard assignment.” Ryker nodded. “But I wanted to go ahead and touch base with the rest of you about a situation in Libya that’s been brought to our attention. Intel is still coming in, so there should be plenty of time to catch King up to speed.”

“What’s happening in Libya?” Cade spoke up. His sharp blue eyes homed in on the man staring back at them from the screen.
