It is important to note, however, that Crutcher’s characters don’t have religious experiences, they have life experiences, and then subsequently explore religious ideals as a way to comprehend what is happening around them. Consider Louie’s experience at Becky’s funeral. Crutcher doesn’t place blame on the preacher or the funeral, both obvious symbolic representations of Christianity; he attributes Louie’s anger at the entire proceeding to the fact that Becky’s mom doesn’t have an understanding of Christianity. The preacher and the funeral represent Crutcher’s idea that the problem isn’t so much with religion as it is with some people’s interpretations of religion.

The first religious reference in The Crazy Horse Electric Game occurs when Jenny Blackburn tells Willie what she’s been up to over the summer:

We went to visit my aunt in Minot. God, I think my parents take me there every year to make the first day of school look good. She watches that religious channel on TV—Trinity Network, I think they call it—the one with the blond lady who has to carry her eyelashes around in a wheelbarrow. (CHEG, 34)
