STEP 9:

THINK ABOUT FACE VALIDITY

Go to the instrument itself—the items to which the manager will respond. Read through the items carefully. Experiment with them by trying to apply them to a manager whose skills you can observe in your organization. Do the items make sense when applied to someone you know? If you go through this exercise with several different managers in mind, you will get a sense of how managers who complete the instrument will feel about its face validity. Face validity isn’t validity in the technical sense but rather whether the instrument looks appropriate for your managers. If the items are awkward or hard to apply, think about dropping this instrument from consideration.
