meaning of mixed-use neighborhood = ({stay home, go for walks}, {go for walks ≻ stay home})
mixed-use neighborhood → meaning → walk → better health
Naturally, there are tradeoffs involved at every step but that is what going from theory to practice inevitably means. That is why, when an architect compares alternative designs for a neighborhood, she cannot blithely write:
meaning of neighborhood = C = ({mixed use, single use}, {mixed use ≻ single use})
Mixed-use neighborhoods are not always preferred to single-use neighborhoods because there are always other factors that also matter. It is rare in architecture to be able to establish such universal “theorems” and so one should not expect to. As we said earlier, theorists always need to go back and forth between abstractions and the total concrete situation which is always very complex.
In any case, one can see that many if not all of these choice-theoretic insights can inform design at various scales, from interiors to exteriors, and they can all work in concert, creating places that nourish life in multiple ways. In both Phil’s workplace and his neighborhood, we can also always add art and sculpture that invite reflection by momentarily getting passersby to bracket the everyday world in order to contemplate alternative possibilities for life itself. That is, art will not only inspire aesthetic responses but can also lead us to see the world afresh. When we do this habitually as an integral part of our day, anchoring can reinforce it by priming us to reorient our lives in more fulfilling ways. Our health consists not only of physical activity and moods but equally of perceptions and thoughts.
