Though Selections of Literature excluded “little talk,” by the early Song dynasty the genre had developed to the point that the emperor commissioned a compendium of roughly seven thousand such works from the turn of the millennium to the present. Printing blocks were carved to prepare the Extensive Records of the Era of Grand Peace (977–78). Yet moral objections halted publication, and the text was published only in 1566. (This delay may testify to fears of fiction’s power.) The sole source for many stories from before the early Song, this work’s belated publication greatly promoted the study of earlier fiction.
