Pathways to China’s Social Future

All of these public goods—healthcare, pensions, education, environment, and energy—are going to be increasingly important to China’s future over the next ten to twenty years and beyond. Recent reforms in healthcare and pensions portend well for the future, but higher education, energy, and the environment are all major trouble spots on the horizon.

The possible pathways to the future are as complex as Chinese society itself. Generally speaking, I see political variables as determining effective management of the social variables—which, in turn, will determine economic development. None of the social and economic challenges we have identified and discussed in the previous two chapters can be effectively addressed or resolved without a significant political loosening and liberalization.
