Chapter Seventeen
Finding his way through the pyramid wasnât as easy as Gareth expected. The floor he had found himself on was enormous, a labyrinth of twisting that seemed almost endless. It felt like just the single floor he was on could contain the entire population of one of Wildermountâs tiers. The sheer size of the pyramid as a whole was difficult to wrap his head around. It wasnât just a single city, it was an entire civilization, everything a society could need in one place. It brought to mind things Gareth had read about in science-fiction, megacities stretching upwards into the sky like termite hives.
Along the corridor were dozens of doors and a few exploratory steps through them had revealed them to be filled with different stores or workshops, the glares from the inhabitants telling Gareth that his presence wasnât wanted. His asking for directions had gone similarly poorly, the random people he had stopped refusing to talk to him. Some of them had even reached for weapons at their waists, typically long daggers with elaborate ornamental handles. Gareth knew that any real attempts to attack him would bounce off his shield but starting a fight in the middle of a city didnât seem like a smart way to ingratiate himself, so he had backed off.
âI donât think this is working,â Sarkuran said after the most recent attempt at finding directions. âThese people are not being particularly cooperative. Unsurprising considering their attitudes towards people such as us. I suggest we simply pick one direction and follow it until we reach the end of that particular course. Itâs better than just choosing passageways at random.â
âThis place is just too big,â Imelda said, gesturing at the corridor around her. âThose guards made it sound easier. Floor fifteen sounds easy enough, but that assumes you know where the stairs are.â
âThey knew what they were doing,â Gareth said. âI bet you anything those guards are laughing at us right now.â He hated being the brunt of a joke, but Gareth had to begrudgingly admit that if the situation were reversed, he might have done the same thing. It was the kind of prank where you could claim it was an innocent mistake on your part, perfect if an annoyed superior came asking about it. âIâm just not sure what weâre-â
Horns blared, filling the corridors with an elaborate tune, dozens of instruments sounded at once, each with a subtly different tone. Almost as one, the people within the corridor spun on their heels, the sound of stone grinding on stone noticeable. They began to walk, each briskly heading in the same direction.
âLooks like we have our direction sorted,â Imelda said, reaching up and scratching the tip of her horn. âReckon these folks are all going somewhere?â
âI would assume so. Probably worth following and checking it out,â Gareth said.
âI canâ¦feel something,â Tax said, her body shuddering for a moment. âI think itâs mana, and lots of it, but itâs not quite right. I canât put my mandibles on what it is exactly.
