Iâm still smarting with embarrassment a few days later when Iâm back at the station for the next photo shoot.
Iâve managed to avoid the chief for most of the morning by staying in the rec room and helping Dave.
Today is Emmettâs turn. Heâs bare-chested and cuddling a floppy eared bunny rabbit.
I thought a kitten would be more appropriate for a fireman, but he insisted on a rabbit. Something to do with how he met his fiancé.
We finish up with Emmett, and Dave checks his schedule.
âNext is Mr. December. Thatâll be the chief.â
My stomach does a somersault. Heâs all Iâve thought about for the last few days. I can still feel his lips on mine and his rough dirty hands on my body. Thereâs a flash of heat between my legs, and my pulse goes up a notch.
Then I remember his rejection of me, and my racing heart turns cold.
Thereâs no point pining over a man who canât see past the age difference. Still, I donât really want to be around when heâs here.
âI think Iâll head off,â I tell Dave.
He looks at me in surprise. âYou canât miss the chief.â
I shrug. âWhy not?â
âBecause itâs the chief, the head honcho. Youâll want a pic of him for social.â
Heâs right. Iâve only posted a couple of the photo shoots, as I donât want to show everything thatâs in the calendar. But a photo of the chief doing his bit will be a good teaser.
Iâll just have to put on a brave face and pretend Iâm not dying of embarrassment at being rejected.
âYouâre right.â I paint on a bright smile. âIâll stay for a bit.â
Dave smiles. âGood, cause I need you to help me dress the set. Iâve got something special planned for Mr. December.â
An hour later Iâm stringing lights over pine trees that are sprayed with fake snow. âHeâs gonna hate this.â
Dave chuckles. âWeâll see.â
I feel the skin tingle on the back of my neck, and I look up to find the chief watching me. I duck my head quickly and finish clipping a light onto the tree.
âWhatâs this?â he growls.
âI thought weâd do a Christmas theme,â says Dave hesitantly. âIâve got this for you to wear.â Dave holds up a red jacket, and the chief scowls.
âIâm not dressing up as Santa Claus.â
âOh no.â Dave shakes his head emphatically. âJust a red jacket. Hanging open of course.â
The chief eyes the jacket suspiciously and starts to unbutton his top shirt. I stand up quickly, almost knocking over a tree.
âHello Rebecca.â He says it softly, and the sound of my name on his lips sends a fresh wave of heat between my legs.
But Iâm not going to let him know how heâs affecting me. I plaster on my best casual smile. âHello Chief.â
He looks at me curiously like heâs not convinced. I quickly head over to the back of the room where Iâve left my bag on a chair and pretend to be busy with my phone.
But out of the corner of my eye, I can see him undressing.
