I’m still smarting with embarrassment a few days later when I’m back at the station for the next photo shoot.

I’ve managed to avoid the chief for most of the morning by staying in the rec room and helping Dave.

Today is Emmett’s turn. He’s bare-chested and cuddling a floppy eared bunny rabbit.

I thought a kitten would be more appropriate for a fireman, but he insisted on a rabbit. Something to do with how he met his fiancé.

We finish up with Emmett, and Dave checks his schedule.

“Next is Mr. December. That’ll be the chief.”

My stomach does a somersault. He’s all I’ve thought about for the last few days. I can still feel his lips on mine and his rough dirty hands on my body. There’s a flash of heat between my legs, and my pulse goes up a notch.

Then I remember his rejection of me, and my racing heart turns cold.

There’s no point pining over a man who can’t see past the age difference. Still, I don’t really want to be around when he’s here.

“I think I’ll head off,” I tell Dave.

He looks at me in surprise. “You can’t miss the chief.”

I shrug. “Why not?”

“Because it’s the chief, the head honcho. You’ll want a pic of him for social.”

He’s right. I’ve only posted a couple of the photo shoots, as I don’t want to show everything that’s in the calendar. But a photo of the chief doing his bit will be a good teaser.

I’ll just have to put on a brave face and pretend I’m not dying of embarrassment at being rejected.

“You’re right.” I paint on a bright smile. “I’ll stay for a bit.”

Dave smiles. “Good, cause I need you to help me dress the set. I’ve got something special planned for Mr. December.”

An hour later I’m stringing lights over pine trees that are sprayed with fake snow. “He’s gonna hate this.”

Dave chuckles. “We’ll see.”

I feel the skin tingle on the back of my neck, and I look up to find the chief watching me. I duck my head quickly and finish clipping a light onto the tree.

“What’s this?” he growls.

“I thought we’d do a Christmas theme,” says Dave hesitantly. “I’ve got this for you to wear.” Dave holds up a red jacket, and the chief scowls.

“I’m not dressing up as Santa Claus.”

“Oh no.” Dave shakes his head emphatically. “Just a red jacket. Hanging open of course.”

The chief eyes the jacket suspiciously and starts to unbutton his top shirt. I stand up quickly, almost knocking over a tree.

“Hello Rebecca.” He says it softly, and the sound of my name on his lips sends a fresh wave of heat between my legs.

But I’m not going to let him know how he’s affecting me. I plaster on my best casual smile. “Hello Chief.”

He looks at me curiously like he’s not convinced. I quickly head over to the back of the room where I’ve left my bag on a chair and pretend to be busy with my phone.

But out of the corner of my eye, I can see him undressing.
