Chapter Nine

Mack Bolan got the call from Stony Man Farm while en route to the private hangar at Chicago Midway, where Grimaldi had stashed the helicopter. Brognola gave Bolan a quick rundown of his conversation with Krantz.

“He’s expecting you,” Brognola concluded. “And he promised full cooperation.”

“That would be a refreshing change,” the Executioner replied.

“Yeah, it doesn’t seem he’s too keen on Andover, either. If he says he’ll back you, I believe him.”

“That’s good enough for me. Thanks, Hal.”

As soon as they landed, Bolan stripped out of his battle gear and blacksuit and donned a pair of blue jeans, a polo shirt and a lightweight black leather jacket. He then drove to police headquarters, where security cleared him and escorted him upstairs to the office of Deputy Chief Marshal Krantz. He was mildly surprised to find that Johnny and Rusch were already there.

Krantz offered Bolan a firm handshake and then got straight to business. “Your guy in Washington speaks highly of you, Blanski.”

Bolan nodded. “Hal’s a good man.”

Krantz arched an eyebrow. “I’ve called in a lot of favors to make this happen. Fortunately, the chief is on vacation so I’m running the show. Naturally.”

“Hal tells me he’s briefed you on the situation and that you’re willing to cooperate with me. I can’t get much into the details of my role, but I can tell you I’m not here for glory or press. My goal is simple. Stop Grec and Madera, and make sure no more police officers die.”

“I’m under no illusions we’re equipped to respond in the same ways you are,” Krantz replied. “But I can assure you the Chicago police are quite capable of bringing a significant force to bear. I’ve already contacted the mayor and explained the situation. He agreed to let me call the play how I see fit, and that I’m to report directly to him. You can put aside any worries about Superintendent Andover and his refusal to cooperate.”

Krantz nodded in Rusch’s direction. “As my first official act, I’ve reinstated Detective Sergeant Rusch. In my view, not only was she instrumental in saving the life of her partner, but she didn’t bring things to us immediately because the same crew that murdered Esparza was most likely gunning for her. Thanks to Mr. Gray’s very thorough explanation of the events leading up to this, it’s my judgment she acted in good faith. I’m not going to fault one of my officers for poor timing in following procedures when she’s running for her life. The mayor was clear he wants this resolved, preferably without bloodshed or violence on our streets.”

“I’ll limit the bloodshed to the enemy,” Bolan said.

“Yeah, well, I sort of assumed the calls we’ve been getting about the mess in the old textile district on the South Side was the result of your handiwork.”

“Yeah, it was.”

“According to what I’ve heard so far, there are bodies out there. A lot of them.”

“I don’t think you’ll find any choirboys among the corpses.”

“Jeez,” Rusch muttered. “You are one cold bastard, Blanski.
