CHAPTER NINE

This child better be glad I love her. That was all Ireland kept thinking as she pulled up to Chicago’s gym. Irish had gone out of town to visit her man. Corrin was staying with Ireland until her mother returned. Irish’s plane was actually landing as Ireland arrived at the gym, but she of course, wouldn’t have been able to take Corrin to her lesson. Ireland didn’t want to tell her niece that she couldn’t do it because she didn’t want to see Chicago. Ireland wasn’t angry with him, but she didn’t know how much grace she’d be able to keep giving him if he was still on that rude shit. She did want to know how he was doing, but she was hesitant to reach out to him. Ireland knew that grief could make people mean. She didn’t hold it against him, but she also didn’t want to volunteer to be his punching bag.

Ireland placed the gear in park and turned towards her niece. “Shakira is cool, right? Do I need to come in with you?” Ireland knew the gym was mostly occupied with men, and she didn’t want to not supervise her niece, but she was almost seventeen, and she had a female trainer.

“Yes, she’s cool. She doesn’t let any of the boys say anything to me.” Corrin rolled her eyes upwards with a smile.

“Good. I’ll be right out here if you need me. I need to respond to some emails.”

Corrin bobbed her head before excitedly scrambling from the car. Ireland wasted no time pulling up her emails and responding to each inquiry. Business was picking up so much so that she had to hire two more girls. Ireland didn’t mind working hard but after working almost every weekend for the past three months, she wanted some time off. More often than not she worked seven days a week. She loved money, but Ireland also wanted some rest. The good thing about owning the business was that she could send someone else to do the job, and she’d still receive payment.

She was so into what she was doing that when she heard a light tap on the passenger window, she jumped. Ireland placed one hand over her racing heart as her head lifted, and she looked over to see Chicago standing at her car. Ireland hit the unlock button, and he opened the door.

“Can I get in?”

“Sure.”

Chicago took his time adjusting his large frame and getting comfortable in the seat. He focused his attention on her and his irises skimmed every inch of her face. Ireland waited patiently for him to speak which he didn’t seem to be in a hurry to do. Gently, he grabbed her hand and used the pads of his thumbs to massage it.

“I’m sorry.” He finally implored.

“It’s okay. You don’t have to apologize. I’m sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. I lost both my parents when I was young. Two years apart. My mother passed when I was twelve.
