CHAPTER 11

Jaxson

I relaxed on the porch. Cheyenne was feeling confused and hurt. I respected it, but she shouldn’t have left alone. I stayed deep in thought until dawn broke. Johan was taking next watch. I was looking forward to sleeping.

There was sound in the distance. I left the porch when the truck came over the hill. Clay parked and then Kyle asked how things went in their absence. I told them what happened with Max and his men. Kyle asked one question after another, but Clay shook his head. “I’m sorry for the disrespect to your wife.

“Thanks, but it’ll get worse.”

“We can turn Max in,” Kyle spoke up. “He admitted to Elijah’s murder. Cheyenne and Gloria heard him say it.”

Clay’s expression was a mixture of anger and grief. I answered before Kyle said more about the subject. “Max was rattled. He told Cheyenne his boss was restless. We have to find out who that is first.”

There was gratitude in Clay’s eyes because I didn’t mention when Max should be turned into the Sheriff. Clay was a lot like my old man, but this wasn’t about comfort. We were short on time. Max put himself in danger, and everyone at the ranch was in the middle of it.

Kyle left to meet the guys hired to help unhitch the cattle trailers. Clay said a company was helping with transport. It was expensive, but they needed to use the service until things were back to normal.

Clay sighed, “I should’ve told Cheyenne.”

“She didn’t take it well,” I told him what happened at the gun range. “I took it too far,” I admitted.

He chuckled. “Cheyenne needed to be set straight. She does what her mind is set on. She’s like her Mom. I’ll explain so you’ll have a better understanding of where that emotion comes from. Cheyenne was the only child and very close to her parents. She was at medical school when they died. I had my ranch back then but heard how things went. An old bull charged her Dad and hit him square in the chest. He smacked his head on the ground and was banged up. He refused treatment, so the doctor came out to see him. Like everyone thought, he was busted up bad. His ribs were crushed and there was possible internal bleeding. The doctor and his wife helped him into the car. No one could say what happened next because we don’t know for sure, but it was the last time we saw any of them alive. The doctor’s car was found that night in a canyon. The report said he had a heart attack and lost control of the car. What were the odds of that?” Clay cleared his throat. “Cheyenne came home, made funeral arrangements, and grieved with the doctor’s family. We wanted to put down that old bull, but she wouldn’t allow it. I stayed here at the ranch until she settled in. One night I went outside to check on things. I found Cheyenne in the pen with that old bull.
