CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The team didn’t get more than half an hour’s ride out of the UTV before it started sputtering and jerking. Ten minutes after that, a cloud of thick white smoke streamed from the vehicle’s hood, joined by a clanking, grating squeal, and finally a loud pop. The UTV coasted to a stop, the air thick with smoke, and Skim leapt out of the driver’s seat. “Everybody out.”

Pill coughed violently, swatting at the smoke with his entire arm before reaching into his side pocket for his inhaler. The rest of the team backed away from the vehicle, watching the remnants of their getaway ride settle into the dirt as the engine let out its last death rattle.

“Piece of shit,” Skim muttered. “Probably came straight from the motor pool.”

Snickering, Badge pulled out their map. “Got us from A to B, though. Or m-maybe more like C. Looks like we made up some time from trying not to b-blow to f-f-fucking pieces at the river.”

“That’s a plus.” Idina scanned their current location. So far, it was free of additional vehicles and anything that looked remotely like an enemy outpost, another base of operations, a set ambush, or that anyone had been out here since Triple-S had touched down on the land-nav site. “Still think we can make it by zero hundred?”

Badge stuffed the map back into her pocket and smirked. “More like twenty-one hundred hours if we k-keep up like this. Twenty-two hundred t-tops.”

“Then let’s get fucking moving.” Trunk snatched the unclaimed rifle from the back of the UTV, looked around to see who was missing theirs, then shoved the weapon into Cake’s arms. “Shouldn’t have to find your damn weapon for ya, man.”

Cake spat a thick, bloody glob into the dirt, then nodded thanks. His grin was equally bloody. “I knew where it was the whole time.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Wait, wait, wait. Hold on.” Pill scurried toward Cake, lowering his rucksack off one shoulder and swinging his entire pack toward his chest. “We’re not moving out ‘til I look at his fucking face.”

Cake snickered. “Didn’t know you switched your MOS to medic.”

“You know I didn’t, asshole. And I know enough about getting shit-whipped in the face to know you’re screwed.”

The corporal tried to dismiss the whole thing with a scoff and a sigh, but fighting off three hostile targets had butchered his lips and cheeks so much that it sounded like wet flapping. “Go baby somebody else.”

“Yeah. Sure. And leave our corporal stranded in the middle of the land-nav when his eye’s so swollen shut, he can’t see shit. And his mouth’s too fucked up to open and shout, ‘Hey, guys. I’m still back here. Don’t leave without me.’”

Badge snorted. “Not like that would make us t-turn around to come g-get his ass anyway.”

Pill paused in his over-eager doctoring to consider that statement, then shrugged. Trunk’s guffawing laughter startled Pill out of his contemplation, and he glared at the massive soldier before swiping his emergency medkit from the side of his pack. “So don’t move, idiot.
