Chapter Eight

"What the fuck is she doing here?" Darek's voice slashed through his mind, asking the same question Duncan was thinking.

"How the hell do I know," he answered, grabbing Laurel's paw, pulling her towards his chest as he rolled.

Stopping when he had his Mate caged in beneath him, safe from whatever or whoever was about to make an impromptu appearance, Duncan could resist no longer. Looking into the eyes of the woman the Universe had made for him, he was at home, at peace, at…

"Ooomph!"

Getting kneed in the groin as she fought to get out from under him and get away was nowhere near anything he’d hoped and dreamed would happen if he ever saw his Mate again. As a matter of fact, it was the exact opposite.

"Laurel!" He half-coughed half-roared as his strong, independent Mate got to her feet, immediately heading right back towards the Hellhound.

Ignoring the burning between his legs, pain shooting in every other direction, and his brothers' laughter filling his mind, Duncan made it as far as his knees, before just like in the Maeotian Swamp, they were under siege. Hellhounds were literally everywhere. All sizes, shapes, more than he could count and more popping into view by the second.

"It's a diversion!" Dillion's roar slashed through his mind and that of the others.

"Transform! Transform! Transform!" Duncan bellowed. "And burn the motherfuckers to the ground."

"Fire?" Deacon questioned, even as Duncan felt the Magic of his brother's Dragon filling the air. "Really? You do know they're Hellhounds, right? Emphasis on Hell. Where it's fire all day every day as far as the eye can see."

"Yes!" Thiago answered. "We fight fire with fire. Protect the Mistress and Laurel at all costs.

"You take care of Laurel," Fate responded. "I've got a long-overdue appointment with the Queen of Malicious Jealousy."

"The who?" All four Stone brothers questioned in unison.

"Just do your jobs, and I'll do mine."

There was no time to argue. Duncan had no previous experience to draw on. Hell, Duncan didn't know Fate could 'walk' on Earth in her physical form until that moment. Because there was nothing in any recorded history any of them could find, all the rumors said She was vapor or mist that moved through the world, what mortal beings knew to be the wind or a ghost.

"Well, that shit's not right, huh?"

"Indeed," Thiago growled, completing the Shift into his Berserker form.

Duncan's blood ran cold, flipping to boiling and back to freezing in the blink of an eye. Only Thiago's legendary control and the strength of his ancient Dragon Magic kept the Berserker's icy madness from filling Duncan's mind. As every muscle, every tendon in his body contracted and contorted, transforming both man and Dragon King into the compact, indestructible form of his Warrior Dragon, it was utter agony and incredible ecstasy all in one.

The enchantment of the Ancients beat against his body from every direction, forcing the large, elongated muscles used for flying into his chest, biceps, and quads. The ground beneath his feet shuddered as he dug the long claws jutting from his toes into the hard, sandy soil to remain standing.
