Basic Greek Gift, Bishop Sacrifice

Let’s now examine the strategic requirements of a successful Greek Gift sacrifice.

Here’s the basic idea, with the board cleared for simplification.

Bxh7+ Kxh7 The two other options aren’t much better (see below).

Ng5+ Kg8

Qh5 Rb8

Qxf7 Kh8

Ne6 Rb7 (5. … Rg8 allows 6. Qh5 mate)

Qxb7 g6

Qg7 mate

If Black decides not to accept the ‘gift’ of the bishop this is what happens: -

1. Bxh7+ Kh8

2. Ng5 g6 (If 2. … f6, 3. Qh5 (the second piece sacrifice) fxg5 4. Bf5+ Kg8 5. Be6+ Rf7 6. Qxf7+ Kh7 and Qh5 mate )
