~ Chapter Sixteen ~

I’d made a crazy decision and asked Callum to sit with me and the gang for lunch just mere days after me and Isaac agreed to be friends. I couldn’t decide who’d been more excited when I’d asked the group if they’d be okay with him spending lunch with us, Joshua, or the girls. Joshua was ecstatic. Partly because I was happy, which was nice, but also because his friend was getting to get to sit with us. The girls were overjoyed. They all thought Callum was gorgeous, plus, it gave them someone else to coo over.

Isaac hadn’t been there when I’d asked the group the night before if Callum could sit with us, he’d been stuck in detention and stupidly it didn’t cross my mind that night to message him and check he’d be okay with it.

That was why I was now stood tugging at my sleeve as I waited for Callum to meet me outside the dining hall before we went in. As I shuffled from heel to heel, I spotted Callum above the crowd coming straight towards me. His handsome smile beamed like a beacon of light through the flurry of students that scuttled between classes. I felt part of the tension ease in the back of my neck and when he took my hand and led me into the dining hall, I almost forgot why I’d been so worried in the first place.

Until we’d grabbed our food and headed to the table. I spotted Isaac before I’d even noticed who else was already sitting at our table. His eyes searched mine in confusion as me and Callum plopped ourselves across from him on the bench. Clearly no-one had informed him that Callum would be joining us today.

I couldn’t let that distract me right now. Callum was already iffy about what was going on between me and Isaac. The conversation he’d walked in on before our last date had been brought up a handful of times in the last few weeks. Every time I’d shut it down. I really didn’t need him digging around in mine and Isaac’s past. I was still thanking the universe that he hadn’t walked in moments before and heard Isaac giving his approval for us to be together, that he really would have questioned.

Focus. I let Callum drape his arm around my shoulders as we settled in at the table. So many pairs of expectant eyes now stared at us. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. These people were the best friends I could ask for, even if they were about to be super embarrassing. Just at that thought, Libby let out the most indiscreet squeal, clapping her hands like a seal, as she grinned from where she was sat beside Isaac.

“I did warn you about this,” I half-whispered to Callum, he just rubbed at my shoulder in reply. I felt a burst of pride run through me, the small gesture reminding me that I wasn’t having to hide this and that no-one was about to beat me up for being happy and content.
