CHEF

“I told you that you’d do fine, man,” I reminded my grinning student over our video conference. “You just had to step back for a minute and get your head on straight. Keep that shit in mind as you go on to whatever magic you plan to do with your life.”

“Good advice. I was terrified I was going to fail, but you and your buddies really helped me out that night by getting my mind off of things. Thanks, Dr. Green.”

“Of course. You keep in touch, man. Either hit me up by email or find me online, and we’ll team up and play together again. Okay?”

“I will. Bye, Dr. Green.”

I watched the screen blink out and reached up and turned the camera off before I shut my computer down for the day. I’d had five different tutoring sessions with students today, and my brain was tired.

When I’d started this online tutoring venture, I really didn’t think there would be much interest. I just wanted a chance to connect with students again after I’d been released from prison, and Preacher had helped me get everything set up. The amount of responses was insane, and I’d had to pick and choose students before I wore myself too thin.

The website Preacher had created for me was almost useless now. Somehow, I’d gotten on the radar of some very important, very rich families who wanted their kids to succeed and were willing to pay dearly for my time. Those rich families told their friends who also had children going to elite schools around the country, and my student base was set. I made sure that for every two paying students, I took in at least one student who couldn’t afford me but had asked for my help.

With the classes I was teaching at the college here in town and the students I already had on my roster, I was putting in at least 50 hours a week and loving every minute of it. There was just something about seeing that light come on in their eyes when they finally grasped what had been giving them trouble. It was what I’d loved about teaching, and that feeling of accomplishment never got old.

Although, I would admit that the online thing was much better than having a classroom of high school students staring at me like I was the dumbest adult on the planet and giving me shit at every turn.

“Another successful elitist has ventured forth from the womb of his privileged upbringing and will now take his place in the upper crust of society because of our Chef,” Preacher said sarcastically. “Isn’t that just sweet?”

“He’s just as important as the kid I’m tutoring who goes to a community college in Montana, Preach. They’re all just kids to me.”

“Kids that can pay you money.”

“No doubt, but if some of them didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to help the ones that can’t too.”

“Are you finished for the day? Wanna go for a ride?” Santa asked from the couch where he’d been napping for the last hour.
