Chapter 9

Sacha

Sacha’s hand was cramping by the time she finished the name cards, each Fugg taking away a bit more of her soul. Hal had gone to pick up the gingerbread cookies, and the cabin felt strange without her, silent and too empty. Hal was quiet and unobtrusive, but she had a presence. She was the human equivalent of a favorite candle, throwing off a warm light and soothing everything around her.

Hal’s footsteps echoed in the hall. When had she memorized that sound? Sacha stood and went to meet Hal, taking the bakery boxes from her and setting them on the counter.

Hal leaned her elbows on the table and studied the name cards laid out. She still wasn’t putting much weight on her knee and she had it bent adorably.

Sacha walked up behind her and put her hand on Hal’s lower back, leaning against her to look at the cards too. “Would you rather sit?” Sacha moved to pull out a chair.

Hal shook her head. “No, I’m good. Sitting in the car just now made my knee a little stiff.”

Sacha settled back against her, feeling the softness of Hal’s sweater beneath her fingertips. “Got it. Did you want to check these against your list and make sure I got them all?”

Hal scanned the table and picked up her list before turning to Sacha with a grin. “And what, might I ask, are all these gold check marks?”

“I am capable of tracking my work, you know, but it will only offend me a little if you want to double-check.”

Hal folded the paper and placed it into her bag. “Very gracious of you.” Hal bowed toward Sacha with a glint in her eye. “But I trust you.”

“I think you might be the only one.”

Hal raised an eyebrow, but the backdoor flew open, startling them both and saving Sacha from Hal’s question by a far worse fate.

Sacha straightened and took a step back.

“Hello, Sacha… and Sacha’s friend.” Her mother was in a cream shirt suit with gold buttons and a pillbox hat. Quite the choice for her daughter’s wedding rehearsal.

“Hi, Mrs. Brighton. I’m Hal. We’ve met a few times. At the shower, and the cake tasting, and looking at venues. And the engagement party. And a few days ago.”

“Right. The wedding planner. Hello again.”

Sacha’s father glanced up from his phone. “Hey, champ.”

“Is everything on track for tonight?” Sacha felt her mother’s eyes trail up and down her, taking in her jeans and sweater before she turned her attention to Hal.

“It is.”

“Great, then why isn’t my daughter ready? We have to leave in two hours.”

“I’m not ready because all I have to do is put on my dress, which will take two minutes.”

“Something must be done about your hair, Sacha.”

Sacha glanced at her dad, who was furiously typing something on his phone.

“What’s wrong with my hair?”

Her mother blinked at her like she’d asked the world’s dumbest question. “I understand that cut is your preference even though it’s too short. At the very least it needs a blowout, but we’ll leave that to the professionals.
