CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Led by Lason, the police arrived thirty minutes after Bell placed the call. There was no hiding her presence anymore.
Thunder rolled over the distant ocean. The full brunt of the storm had moved out to sea, but a clinging mist sopped Bell, who shivered with a blanket around her shoulders.
A bear of a man, Chief Haggens stroked his auburn beard as he towered over Bell. He kept glancing between Bell and her gory discovery as if sheâd murdered the victim and buried the body parts in shallow graves. Each time Officer Lason tried to intervene, Haggens snapped off an expletive-laden tirade about feds interfering in his investigation.
âGive me one goddamn reason why I shouldn't phone your supervisor and asks him why the hell a field agent on administrative leave dug up body parts in my backyard.â
âI didn't dig them up, sir.â
Haggens slapped his cap against his leg and stomped in a circle.
âSame difference. As if I don't have enough problems to deal with. Now I've got a rogue field agent snooping around murder scenes. How did you say you came upon our vic, Agent Bell? What brought you out to a random swamp in the Georgia countryside?â
âI followed a hunch.â
âBased on?â
âYour team already determined the killer is pulling a trailer.â Technically, the city crime techs and the FBI had pieced the evidence together, but Bell knew to stroke the police chiefâs ego. âHe can't hide a trailer in plain sight, especially with the entire town looking for him.â
âBut why the swamp?â
âWater plays an important role, perhaps something symbolic.â
âYou haven't seen the case evidence, and you're already making assumptions about the murderer.â
Lason caught Bellâs eye, a warning not to tell Haggens they'd shared details about the case.
âNot assumptions, Chief. More like educated guesses.â
Haggens nodded at Bellâs cheek.
âYou have a piece ofâ¦armâ¦on your cheek.â
âWhat?â Bell thumbed a pulpy chunk of flesh off her face. âOh, Jesus.â
Haggens dug a handkerchief from his pocket and offered it to Bell.
âItâs clean.â
âThanks.â
Bell brushed the cloth over her face, and the corner came away red. She held it out for Haggens, who shook his head.
âKeep it. I got plenty. Tell me, Agent Bell. How many of these maniacs have you encountered?â
âMore than I care to mention. Listen, Chief. You're so close to catching him. With a bolo out on his car and trailer, you've got him hemmed in.â
âPerhaps, but what's to say he isn't halfway to Mississippi by now?â
âBecause he can't control himself. Two murders and one missing girl in a matter of days. He's acting on a primal level, hunting the same environment until he depletes the game.â
And because he knows I'm here, Bell thought. Whatever grisly fate the deceased had met, only his arm remained. Bell, figuring the gators and coyotes took the rest of the body, considered it a leap of faith to tie this victim to the Erwin murders, but the tire tracks matched those found in the park. Then again, the possibility existed the killer dumped the rest of the body elsewhere.
